Cybersecurity Tips: Securing Financial Information In the Holiday Season

by | Nov 30, 2020 | Insights, Cyber Warfare

The holiday season is on the horizon making it an exciting, yet stressful season for some. The official start of the holiday shopping season is on the day after Thanksgiving, Black Friday, where people go out to the mall to find the best deals on gifts to give to their family members on Christmas.

A relatively new addition to the holiday shopping season is Cyber Monday where shoppers can get the same deals as a Black Friday special, this time without all the madness and from the comfort of their own homes. Cyber Monday not only brings out all these shoppers, but also the hackers looking for the perfect opportunity to steal your information when you are least expecting it.

To put it into perspective, on Cyber Monday online traffic can soar up to 152 percent above average online traffic, leaving more than enough room for cybercriminals to do all they can to make a buck. Security concerns rise on this day because many people fall for fake coupons and ads, social media scam posts, and email spam.

Just remember, if the coupon seems too good to be true, then it probably is. There are ways to avoid becoming a victim of these crimes like avoiding public Wi-Fi, updating all software, and making sure the vendor’s website is a secure website, especially at checkout.

If the inevitable occurs, it is always best to make your purchases with a credit card as it is much easier for the bank to dispute a charge from a credit card. It is also very important to consistently monitor your financial statements to scan for any fraudulent charges.

Overall, implementing these tips minimizes your chances of becoming a victim of cybercrime. We hope these tips help you stay ahead of the game. Happy Shopping!
