Summit 2019: Enlightened Responses to the
Growing Demand for Personal Data

The IAPP Global Privacy Summit 2019 explored the risk of defining personal data as an economic resource without the counterbalance of individual privacy rights. That issue question played out through breakout sessions on policy and operational details, and through the visionary imaginations of keynote speakers Margaret Atwood, danah boyd and Dani Shapiro.

Breakout sessions covered a huge variety of big topics in privacy, among them artificial intelligence, privacy by design, cross-border data transfers and data localization. It was clear from regulators’ remarks that the GDPR is rewriting the privacy profession’s rules. Data subjects are exercising their rights. Regulators are giving form to provisions like the fairness requirement and preparing to back them up with steep fines. The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) is not far behind on privacy pros’ minds, if standing-room-only sessions are any indication.
